One Customer’s Roof Clean – from troublesome signs to finished job!

Freshly cleaned residential roof ready for the wetter months

At this time of year, a lot of roofs start showing what the summer has left behind, and it is worth dealing with those signs before autumn settles in properly. One of our customers, Helen, did just that. She got in touch after noticing dark patches inside the front bedroom, on the wall and around the window, along with moss building up on the ridges and staining on the wall below one side of the house.

She booked the job through our quotation and booking system rather than arranging a separate visit just to get a price. She entered her postcode, selected roof cleaning and worked through the tick-box questions. Once the booking was in, we carried out a virtual survey digitally, checking that what we could see matched the quotation, and called Helen as a welcome courtesy to confirm the plan. It is a hands-off process for suitable routine jobs, with an instant quotation and available booking times without the need for a site visit first.

The day of the clean had that cooler, clearer feel that marks the change in season, the sort of day when exterior jobs are best done before the weather turns properly wet. When we arrived, we assessed the roof from the ground and around the property before starting any work. Helen's roof was tiled, with established moss across the upper sections, heavier growth along the ridges and visible staining where water and debris had been tracking down towards the wall below.

That condition shaped the method. The moss was thick enough in places to need careful scraping and physical removal first, and the bulk of the growth had to come away before we could judge the surface properly. We use a flexible aluminium pole with a head shaped for the profile and surface of the tiles, working across the affected areas without rushing the job. As the roof cleared, the source of the staining below became easier to read. Loose material had been holding moisture higher up and feeding debris down towards the roof edge, so we also checked the gutters and outlets from ground level using a handheld inspection camera, which helps us see whether moss and runoff had started affecting drainage without disturbing the roof surface.

Once the scraping was complete, we applied a biocide treatment to the roof. It penetrates the surface and works over the following months to inhibit regrowth, so the clean keeps doing its job long after we have left. The full process is set out in our roof cleaning guide on our website. On roofs where growth is lighter and more surface-based, a treatment-led approach can be the right fit from the start; on Helen's roof, the thickness of the moss made physical removal the necessary first step. Beneath the growth, her roof was in better shape than the surface appearance had suggested. In a couple of areas, though, the buildup had been hiding a few things we were glad to spot.

With the treatment applied, as included, we cleared the gutters and downpipes, cleaned the roofline, windows and doors so the finished work was properly showcased, then stood back and left the biocide to get on with it. The biocide keeps working over the coming months, and per the manufacturer's guidance it continues preventing regrowth for up to five years. We also took away the roof debris and plant matter and disposed of it legally, as we hold a waste carrier's licence. Just as importantly, we had removed the loose material that might otherwise have continued washing down into the drainage system as the season turned wetter.

Making the Most of the Visit

Helen kept her booking to the roof clean itself, and that suited her fine. But the same visit can often cover more if needed — Conservatory Cleaning, Solar Panel Cleaning and Driveway and Patio Cleaning, or regular gutter clearing through our ground-based vacuum equipment, which works from ground level in a fast, non-intrusive way for most cleans. We also carry out Cladding & Render Cleaning, and for larger premises we provide Commercial Services with an online quotation available. For higher premises or complex commercial sites, we are IPAF-approved operators for cherry picker and platform work.

Helen paid for her job as a one-off, but there are other options. We offer an interest-free payment option through our partners at PayItMonthly — three monthly instalments, available at checkout, subject to eligibility and affordability checks (18+). Our VIP Membership is a recurring monthly subscription for regular, scheduled gutter cleans, available exclusively to existing domestic customers and including a 3-year price freeze.

If your roof is showing troublesome early signs, you can get an instant roof-cleaning quote and choose a suitable booking time online. Sometimes the right moment to deal with it is simply the moment you realise the house has started asking.
