A clear autumn morning is often the best time to look at your home’s exterior. The roof may appear sound, the gutters may seem tidy from the ground and the patio may only need a quick sweep. However, wetter and windier weather can reveal small maintenance issues that have been developing quietly through spring and summer.
The current Met Office outlook suggests a greater likelihood of warmer, wetter autumn conditions, with windier weather more likely later in the season due to the El Niño effect. That is a good reason to look over your home’s exterior now, while the weather is still settled.
I recommend looking at the exterior as a connected system. Gutters, roofs, walls, glazing, paths and solar panels all deal with rain, moisture, dirt and windblown debris. Cleaning and checking them together can make your home look better while helping rainwater move away as intended.
Gutters and downpipes are easy to overlook because much of the system sits above eye level. Leaves, moss, small twigs and roof grit can collect in the channels, especially where trees are close to the house.
When rain arrives, a blocked gutter may overflow over fascias, soffits, render or window frames. Wind can also move loose debris around the roofline, allowing more material to enter the rainwater system.
Our preferred method is a ground-based clean using powerful gutter vacuum machines. This is fast, non-intrusive and appropriate for most cleans, working from ground level while removing debris from the channels and checking the outlets.
We take a flexible approach to each home. The roofline, access around the building and the amount of debris help us decide the most suitable method rather than forcing the same process onto every job, using our inspection camera if requested as an optional service for viewing gutters and outlets from ground level.

A roof has to cope with repeated rain, moisture, changing temperatures and wind. Moss, lichen and algae can hold moisture against tiles, while dirt and organic debris can collect around roof features and gutter edges.
Our domestic roof cleaning service can include controlled scraping or a biocide treatment. Scraping physically removes moss where that is the appropriate approach. An eco-friendly biocide treatment works across the roof surface on moss, algae and lichen growth, helping to slow regrowth on the treated areas while remaining safe for the surrounding environment.

Conservatories receive a great deal of exposure. Their roof panels and frames collect airborne dirt, algae, leaf residue and bird debris. When rain falls, this material can spread across glazing and create dirty runs down the frames.
Wind-driven rain can make this more noticeable because it pushes moisture and dirt into frame joints, seals and edges. Clean glazing will not prevent all weather-related wear, but it makes it easier to spot areas that need attention.
Cleaning the conservatory alongside the gutters is often practical because both services involve the same part of the home and are affected by falling leaves and rainwater. It also gives you a clearer view of seals, glazing and frame condition before the weather becomes more unsettled.

Wind and rain do not affect every external wall in the same way. Exposed elevations can receive more driven rain, while shaded areas often stay damp for longer, and runoff from an unclean roof or gutter can add further marks to the surfaces below, including fascias and soffits. Render and cladding can show staining where water repeatedly follows the same route. This creates suitable conditions for algae, green growth and dirt to build up in those areas.
Rain can also sit on the surface or get behind a rendered wall, especially where staining or small cracks give moisture a route to follow. Where water gets behind render, the finish can later blow or blister.
Our Cladding & Render Cleaning service assesses the surface and selects a suitable cleaning approach, which may include gentle washing and an eco-friendly biocide treatment. It works on the organic growth on the treated surface, helping the wall stay cleaner for longer while remaining safe for the surrounding environment.

Dirt, moss and algae can make outdoor surfaces look tired and may leave them slippery when wet. Autumn leaves then add another layer of organic material, particularly in shaded corners and along borders.
Our Driveway, Patio and Path Cleaning service covers these outdoor surfaces with the method matched to the surface and the build-up present. Jet washing or a softer wash with biocide treatment may be used, with no single approach applied to every surface.
A clean surface can also make rainwater movement easier to understand. It becomes simpler to see whether water is collecting in one area, moving towards the house or gathering around blocked channel drains.
Cleaning does not replace repairs or drainage work where those are needed. If you have an underground drainage problem, you should arrange a suitable drainage contractor yourself. Our role is to clean the visible external surfaces and help you identify areas that may need separate attention.

Solar panels are designed to sit outside in all weather, but rain does not remove every type of surface dirt. Dust, pollen, bird debris, moss, lichen and windblown material can remain around panel edges and frames.
Solar panel cleaning uses suitable equipment and a careful brushing process to remove surface deposits without treating the panels like ordinary paving or masonry. Keeping the panels clean also makes it easier to check their visible condition and the surrounding roof area.
It is sensible to include solar panels in a wider autumn exterior clean when roof, gutter or conservatory work is already being considered. Multi-service discounts are available for domestic customers, so combining suitable services may be more economical than arranging each clean separately.
Old staining may not fully lift, and some older surfaces can be fragile. We will take the age, finish and cleaning requirements of the surface into account when recommending an approach. Our aim is to clean responsibly, not to apply unnecessary pressure or an unsuitable treatment.
These are the things we are asked about most often and the service that usually covers each one.
| What you may notice | The service that helps |
|---|---|
| Gutters overflowing, water running down the wall or staining below the joints | Gutter cleaning |
| Heavy moss, lichen, dark algae staining or debris gathering in roof valleys | Roof cleaning |
| Dirt, algae and leaf residue across conservatory roof panels and frames | Conservatory cleaning |
| Green and dark staining on render, cladding, fascias or soffits | Cladding & Render Cleaning |
| Slippery or stained driveways, paths and patios, with moss between the joints | Driveway, Patio and Path Cleaning |
| Dust, pollen, bird debris and lichen dulling solar panels | Solar panel cleaning |
Blocked downpipes affect rainwater collection, and our gutter cleaning service includes clearing the downpipes down to the elbow.
